[livejournal.com profile] picspammy challenge, yet again

I am really spamming the hell out of this latest picspam challenge. This is going to be the last one though, and it's different than other spams I've done, a) because I've actually tried to put caps in order (fancy that), and b) because I've run them through photoshop this time (good golly!). ie, I've not been lazy this time around! And it's because this one is a topic very near and dear to my heart: Eight Favorite Characters of Color. It's no secret that I love me my minority characters, and this spam celebrates that from childhood through now. It was always really important to me to see people who looked like me on screen and, not going to lie, I tended to favor them, especially when it came to fanfic. And fashion. And my hair. What, I'm easily swayed!

It's a bit of a diverse mix (fandom-wise), but they are my favorites and the only one I didn't include was already spammed. That's alright though, she's not number one XD! Often times I feel like these characters are either obscure or just don't get the attention they deserve.

So, without further ado...

Tia Dalma

When Ana Maria disappeared in between the first and second movies, I was so happy to see Tia pop up and replace her. I still long for some kind of explanation as to where Ana Maria went, but then Tia appeared with her dreads and her dirty yet gorgeous off the shoulder dress and her strange allure, and I was hooked. She had all the power. One day I'm going to cos-play as her, even if she's completely irrelevant at that point. Actually, there are several people on this list I intend to cos-play as.

Mozenrath

Aladdin was my favorite Disney movie until I realised how much I appreciated Beauty and the Beast, but I always favored the Aladdin cartoon show over all of the other Disney spinoffs. A big part of this was Mozenrath, a teenaged sorcerer voiced by Jonathan Brandis, who may or may not be Aladdin's long-lost half brother (he was supposed to be in the third movie, until the plot changed). He had a magical gauntlet that he wore on one hand and the power ate away at his hand, so he just had a bone underneath the glove. I think, when I was eight, that I found that incredibly sexy. To this day, I consider myself lucky when I turn on Toon Disney and there's an Aladdin episode on featuring Mozenrath.

Angela Moore

I can't say enough about what Angela from Boy Meets World did for my self confidence as a kid. This may sound quite odd, but Angela/Shawn was my first inter-racial 'ship and made me realise that even though my friends made fun of me for it, liking White Boys was totally okay. Especially if they looked like Shawn. She also had awesome hair, great clothes, and wrote papers entitled, "Maintaining My Black Identity While Having Very White Friends." Nuff said.

Huey and Riley Freeman

Huey and Riley from The Boondocks are hilarious. Huey is a tiny revolutionary and Riley is a wannabe thug, who can't be a thug because he really doesn't have it in him. Plus, he's from the suburbs and has a no-nonsense grandfather. They basically say things that I want to say, but can't in polite company, and that they shouldn't be saying because they're kids. But awesome ones. You name me another ten year old that put everyone in their places at the R Kelly trial.

Kim Mathis

I saw this movie (Death Proof) and about four weeks later cut out my perm. No, really. That was pretty much the time-line. Tracie Thoms as Kim is one of the main reasons I went back to natural hair. Other than that? Well she and her friends got terrorise by some old guy and decided, instead of running away and crying, to go beat his ass. Literally.

Captain Steven Hiller

Independence Day is one of my all time favorite movies. Captain Hiller is a fuckin' G. Somehow in the course of this movie he finds time to bond with his kid, mourn his friend's death, capture himself an alien, save his girl friend in an Army Blackhawk, get married, learn how to fly an alien space ship, blow up the mothership, and get his kid 4th of July fireworks. And NASA didn't want this bad ass mother fucker? Pft, their loss.

Misty Knight

Some people have Thinspiration? I have Hairspiration. I understand that she's a comic book character in the Marvelverse and that I'm never going to look like her, but damn. Misty Knight is a red leather wearing, gun toting, bailbondswoman with attitude. She says things like "there's about to be some kung fu up in here" and "I love that crazy white girl". She has a prosthetic arm created for her by the one and only Tony Stark and a relationship with him that (in my head at least) consists of lots of fighting and makeup sex. And, yes, I want her hair.

Capatin Benjamin Lafayette Sisko

When I was younger I got really mad at my dad one day and told him that Ben Sisko would be a better dad than he was. I really hurt his feelings, but do you see how deep my love for Captain Sisko runs? There is a lot to love about him. We can start with the fact that he was born and raised in New Orleans, and then move on to the fact that he loves baseball and Jackie Robinson is his hero. Then there's the whole thing where he's a Bajoran god, runs a space station, is scary intimidating, and HITS Q!!! There are a lot of reasons for his awesome, but it's 3:30 in the morning, so let's not expect too much. Suffice to day DS9 was the best Trek to ever Trek, and I know that as a true fan I should be championing Kirk or Picard, but Picard killed Sisko's wife, so suck it XD! I don't care that he was assimilated at the time >.>

Honorable Mentions
Lao Ma (Xena: Warrior Princess), Jade Nguyen (DC Comics), Lian Harper (DC Comics), Lucius Fox (Batman, Nolanverse), Colleen Wing (Marvel Comics)

When I saw Kim Mathis I was like... That's not her name! It's Det. Kat Miller. And then I realized you were doing Death Proof and not Cold Case. LOL. She's one of my favorite characters on Cold Case. Honestly I love all of the characters, but there is something about her and Vera that have me rolling on the floor laughing. They have this great chemistry, and tend to feed off each other.

Also So much love for having Trials and Tribbulation Sisko! (I still have hardcore Picard love. Sorry!) But Sisko was so awesome!

[identity profile] cajun-chick411.livejournal.com 2009-11-26 04:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't know she was currently on anything, but that's good to hear! I've loved her since Wonderfalls and I really want her in more movies!

Oh, Trials and Tribbleations and Far Beyond the Stars are easily my two favorite Trek episodes ever. I had to include them!

[identity profile] biscottis.livejournal.com 2009-11-26 09:55 am (UTC)(link)
I cannot agree more with Angela Moore! Easily one of my favourite characters of Boy Meets World ♥ Great picks! :)

[identity profile] cajun-chick411.livejournal.com 2009-11-26 04:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks! I miss that show so much.

i laughed SO hard when i read that. this was a great picspam and I love all the characters you mentioned. you should cross post this at [livejournal.com profile] choc_fic, i'm sure they'd get a kick out of it too :)

[identity profile] cajun-chick411.livejournal.com 2009-11-26 04:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Just crossposted, thanks for for the suggestion!

I love this list! Angela/Shawn...Sisko. Oh, the memories!

[identity profile] cajun-chick411.livejournal.com 2009-11-26 04:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you! Angela/Shawn to me is just... ♥

[identity profile] starsystems.livejournal.com 2009-11-26 03:08 pm (UTC)(link)
great picspam!
I was so sad that Ana Maria disappeared from the PotC movies, I wanted her to become one of the main characters! :|

[identity profile] cajun-chick411.livejournal.com 2009-11-26 04:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you!!

Captain Hiller! I love Independence Day in a completely non-ironic way, and he's a HUGE part of the reason. He's got a lot of attitude, which I normally find annoying, but the thing is, he can back it up. He is just that awesome, so it's okay.

[identity profile] cajun-chick411.livejournal.com 2009-11-26 04:30 pm (UTC)(link)
All the disaster!porn movies since then have nothing on ID4. No one else can blow up the White House like they did and have such awesome characters at the same time, and thus it's totally cool to like it in a non-ironic way XD!

THIS PICSPAM IS AWESOME AND YOU SHOULD FEEL AWESOME

dude. The only person on the list I'm not totally familiar and in love with is Mozenrath (I watched some of the Aladdin show when I was a kid but not enough to remember him I guess), but holy shit, Angela. Steve Hiller! KIM! ♥ motherfucking Sisko! By the way, true story: I bumped into Avery Brooks at Fan Expo this year (it's Toronto's equivalent of Comic-Con), like, literally walked right into him because I was staring at a super-hot chick cosplaying as an Orion. I was all "OH SHIT SORRY" and he said "excuse me" and put his hand on my shoulder for like a second and walked away and I stood there frozen. "...JESUS CHRIST, CAPTAIN SISKO JUST TOUCHED ME." I am the least smooth person in the entire world but it was awesome.

and I'm as white as they come but I wish I had Misty Knight's hair too. :D EPIC spam!

[identity profile] cajun-chick411.livejournal.com 2009-11-26 04:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Ahaha, thank you!

It was 3 in the morning when I did this and thus forgot the story that I meant to put up there, which was that Avery Brooks essentially picked my college for me, in that I was deciding between Oberlin, UCLA, and Pitzer and then I found out that Avery Brooks went to Oberlin so I chose Oberlin because I figured that he might come back while I was there and I'd get to meet him. AND THEN HE DID! AND THEN I DID! Avery Brooks = Awesome!

[identity profile] blackmamba-esq.livejournal.com 2009-11-26 04:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh my gosh, this is awesome! I love a lot of the characters you mentioned and I'm excited to learn more about others.

Like Misty Knight! She looks fantastic :D

[identity profile] cajun-chick411.livejournal.com 2009-11-26 04:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Misty is fantastic! Her main book is Heroes For Hire and it's out in trades if you want to check it out.

[identity profile] bana05.livejournal.com 2009-11-26 06:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I approve of this picspam, yes.

[identity profile] cajun-chick411.livejournal.com 2009-11-27 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks XD!

[identity profile] hamimifk.livejournal.com 2009-11-26 07:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes! <3 Huey and Riley! They are some of the best characters ever on tv and in comic strips. It's sad they get overlooked because they aren't 'real' characters, but the things they do and say, man, they floor me with their genius.

Kim! And Tia! <3 Excellent kick ass women. I really love this picspam of yours!

[identity profile] cajun-chick411.livejournal.com 2009-11-27 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
I really love them on both the show and the strip. I hear the show is coming back in March and am super excited for that!

Thank you!

Man, I love me some Huey & Riley. What you said is so true.

and I know that as a true fan I should be championing Kirk or Picard PFFFT and this is comeing from one epicly huge Kirk fan xD

Seriously, Sisko is *awesome*. Not really fond of Ds9 (D: sorry) but I do love Sisko.

[identity profile] cajun-chick411.livejournal.com 2009-11-27 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
I think I liked DS9 so much because it had a sort of... West Wing political feel to me. I liked how broad it was. And Sisko DEFINITELY helped, hah!

I love new!Kirk, though and well, Shatner will always be Shatner.

[identity profile] tokenblkgirl.livejournal.com 2009-11-27 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
This is truly amazing, I love every single character you've highlighted here, especially Kim Mathis. God, she was so kick ass. :D

[identity profile] cajun-chick411.livejournal.com 2009-11-27 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks! I noticed you were a Bonnie/Damon and Dean/Cassie fan. I considered for awhile doing my favorite interracial 'ships spam (before deciding that was was too specific, LOL) and they're both completely on it. Even if Bonnie was originally white XD!

WIN

[identity profile] peppermintxrose.livejournal.com 2009-11-27 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
MOZENRATH OMG FTW FOREVER ♥ Never would you expect to see that as part of a picspammy, haha xD

I pretty much love all the Aladdin movies and the TV series (wish they still played it on TV here in America D:).

Re: WIN

[identity profile] cajun-chick411.livejournal.com 2009-11-27 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
Oh man, I loooooove Mozenrath. My friends all look at me oddly when I say he's my fave Aladdin character, but it's true! He deserves more love.

Sometimes if you happen to be up at 3am on a Sunday, you can catch them on the Disney Channel. A tiny part of me wishes they would come out on DVD!

late response

[identity profile] peppermintxrose.livejournal.com 2009-12-08 03:31 am (UTC)(link)
It was an incredibly well-done for a cartoon character that originated on a spin-off TV series, hehe.

Ahh that's cool! Here in California they don't play it on any of the three Disney channels. :/ They really should put them on DVD, I think there would be a ton more interest in that than in all the crap sequels they release. It's so frustrating. I have a little hope though, since they recently released Darkwing Duck and TaleSpin :D

THE SISKO <3 I just rewatched all of DS9. So awesome.

Have you seen this amazing customized Tia Dalma doll (http://noeling.deviantart.com/art/Doll-repaint-Tia-Dalma-138140653)? (The original was so bad. She didn't even have real locks; she had ringlets. WTF?)

[identity profile] maelyng.livejournal.com 2009-11-27 12:56 pm (UTC)(link)
This is so much <3. Awesome picspam.

[identity profile] livrelibre.livejournal.com 2009-11-27 03:16 pm (UTC)(link)
This is great!

Awesome!

Excellent picspam! Steven Hiller & Ben Sisko in one place! *loves*

[identity profile] zxfactor.livejournal.com 2009-12-02 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
Very nice. Thanks for introducing me to some characters :)

Angela!!!

[identity profile] floetcist.livejournal.com 2009-12-09 08:13 am (UTC)(link)
YAY! Wasn't expecting to see her here. Awesome :) If you're interested, I have a Shawn/Angela LJ community. [livejournal.com profile] bmwshawnangela

I adore Xena: Warrior Princess, and Lao Ma was great. The Debt really is the best Xena episode. I also liked M'Lila (Destiny) who taught Xena how to fight and sacrificed her life for her (albeit that made her go batshit insane, but still). And Gina Torres as Cleopatra was a nice.

[identity profile] razycrandomgirl.livejournal.com 2010-04-10 08:04 am (UTC)(link)
okay ... I love you.
